Looking for both greater exposure and ways to carve its niche in the world of civic journalism, the UNLV student website Virtual Rebel is reinventing itself.

Gregory Borchard, Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies professor, explains that this is not the first time that the young website has evolved.

Previously named East Paradise, Virtual Rebel was originally aimed towards freelance writers. It has become an ideal outlet for UNLV students to exercise their writing talents and to publish.

Jessica Zimmerman, web coordinator for Virtual Rebel, helps head the operation with plans to turn the “work in progress” into its next incarnation.

She is looking to sharpen the format, add more student writing, and implement a new logo. Plans also include development of a Virtual Rebel mobile app.

The website is not-for-profit and most necessary tasks will be given to the eager UNLV students who hope to see their work published and have their stories read. Faculty and residents in the community are also welcome to contribute.

Virtual Rebel represents an opportunity for college students—an opportunity to gain something very close to real work experience in a classroom setting.

Virtual Rebel has been online in various capacities since 2007.
