What started as a hobby grew into an interest, and now Rene McCullough speaks of fashion as her ultimate career goal, and more importantly, her passion.
McCullough attends classes at the University of Nevada,Las Vegas and maintains a part-time sales associate job at Nordstrom, but she never loses sight of her main focus.
“I want to own my own store and (fashion) line one day,” says McCullough, a 21-year-old from New Jersey, whose interest for fashion first started in middle school due to an influence from a family friend.
McCullough first became interested in fashion as a way to rebel against her mom who never liked to shop, however, McCullough says that once she was introduced to the many designers featured on style.com, she knew what she wanted to do.
Style.com quickly became McCullough’s addiction. She began to “stalk designers,” McCullough says, and would spend her time making PowerPoints of her favorite designers and studying their work. It was through the hours spent studying that she came across a program called the fashion club, where she was first introduced to the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising.
Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) is a fashion institute with four locations in Calif. McCullough says that she would love to attend the FIDM in either Los Angeles or San Diego, because these places would offer her the most opportunities.
McCullough’s mother, Mary Collins, is very supportive of her daughter’s ambitions to be successful in the fashion industry, however, Collins believes the most important thing she has taught her daughter is to “plan for the future and to save up for her dreams.” In order to please her mother, McCullough must first obtain a bachelor’s degree from a university before she can continue on to a fashion institute.
McCullough chose to major in journalism with a focus in public relations because she feels that through public relations’ circuit internships, she will gain connections with different people who will help her further her fashion business.
Until McCullough gets the opportunity to attend school for fashion, she continuously teaches herself about fashion trends through her Tumblr account. “I got addicted to Tumblr at the beginning of last year,” McCullough says. “I update it pretty much every night before I go to bed.”
It is through this blogging website where McCullough is allowed to express her individual style, which McCullough describes as “outside the box.” “You will rarely see me in all black,” McCullough says. “I’ve never seen anyone in a bright green pea-coat except me.”
McCullough also uses her Tumblr account to prepare herself in hopes that one day she will own a successful web business. McCullough would prefer a web business over an in-store establishment because she believes it is the most profitable way to do business. “It is the future of successful businesses,” McCullough says.
McCullough currently has all of her dreams and goals displayed on a blog for the world to see, but eventually McCullough hopes to turn those dreams and goals into reality. McCullough’s mother, Collins, is McCullough’s main source of motivation and describes her daughter as “a very happy, very socially gifted person – she’s a hard worker.”
McCullough’s passion for fashion is what drives her to be successful and to fulfill her dreams. McCullough says, “I love that in fashion you can be whoever you want to be – it’s sort of like a costume; it’s exciting, vibrant, never boring.”
