On Wed. nights, instead of hanging in the library or at a desk to work on business or homework, dozens of people are going to Grouchy John’s Coffee shop in Henderson, Nev. for their bi-weekly pop-up co-working event.

These co-working nights begin around 6 p.m. and end at midnight, making Grouchy John’s Coffee the hot spot for any networking fanatic to go and be able to work on business, homework or just drink coffee.

According to John Enigmas, owner of Grouchy John’s Coffee, the shop began their business two years ago at an event downtown with only three drinks available: a coffee, a latte and an espresso.

Eight months ago Grouchy John’s Coffee opened a location near Windmill and Maryland Parkway in Henderson, Nev. The shop also has a mobile trailer that is used to serve coffee at events happening around the city.

When they first opened the shop eight months ago, they would close regularly at 8 p.m. and the people that were there doing work would have to go somewhere else.

After a while people started to come regularly to do their work and Enigmas got to know them. “All these guys are starting up their own business,” Enigmas says.

Enigmas’ goal is to embrace the people who want to hangout, so he began the pop-up co-working nights once a month. These co-working nights have now progressed to every other week.

“Night owls love our spot,” says Enigmas.

Included in these regular “night owls” are Mark Johnson and Mark Cicoria. Johnson and Cicoria started coming to Grouchy John’s Coffee a little over a month ago because they wanted a place to go late at night when the local 24/7 Starbucks became too crowded.

Johnson says that Grouchy John’s Coffee is an, “awesome place to come hang out and work. It has good wifi, good coffee and a good atmosphere to work in.”

Johnson and Cicoria both attended A-Tech High School in Las Vegas, and now they are business partners working on creating a smart phone application.

Johnson and Cicoria’s app is called Ayloo and launched Nov. 29.

“Ayloo is an iPhone app that lets you know what’s going on and who’s doing what,” said Johnson. “Events like this, we want people to be able to find out about them.”

The app is designed to inform Las Vegas locals about events to attend depending on their interests.

It works by having the user input personal interests into the app. Ayloo will then find community events related to those interests happening around the city and send push notifications about them to the user.

“We would like to see a spark in community here in Vegas,” says Cicoria. “We are trying to get people that aren’t aware of the community to gather and get to know each other.”

In order to get the app noticed, they are holding a week-long launch event following the app’s launch date. The launch events will take place Dec. 3-7.

According to the Facebook page for the event, titled Gather, the events will take place around the city at five local businesses: Grouchy John’s Coffee, The Beat Coffeehouse, Leone Cafe, Sunrise Coffee and Perk Up Coffee.

The specific times and details of each event will be available through Ayloo, which can be downloaded directly onto an iPhone or through the app’s website page, http://www.ayloo.net .

Enigmas, founder of Grouchy John’s Coffee, knows what it takes to get a business off of the ground but also can testify to the success it brings once it is launched. Through these bi-weekly co-working nights, Enigmas helps others do the same.

“Our general sense is supporting community,” says Enigmas. “Giving back is a way of expanding our business.”

Johnson and Cicoria’s app will also help Grouchy John’s Coffee grow. Besides, according to Johnson, “Local coffee is way better.”
